From our original archivecommunity & culture
The public Durga Puja tradition in Gitanagar began in 1975. The committee’s formal history also records that respected senior members of Geetanagar came together in 1976 with a shared vision to organise Durga Puja and Laxmi Puja and to preserve the locality’s cultural heritage.
Over the decades, the celebration grew in scale and recognition. The committee’s account highlights multiple awards in Guwahati competitions, including Best Puja, while the annual Bhawani souvenir received Best Souvenir honours twice.
The Puja welcomes people across communities and backgrounds. Residents and new members are encouraged to join, contribute and help ensure that the celebration continues to grow with the same collective spirit.
Bhawani keeps our stories alive.
The annual Bhawani souvenir brings together cultural contributions and stories from the community. It is one of the committee’s signature cultural initiatives and has twice been recognised as Best Souvenir during Durga Puja celebrations in Guwahati.
