The Glorious Journey of Gitanagar’s Public Durga Puja
Once a quieter and more semi-rural part of Guwahati, the Gitanagar area near Bagarbari gradually developed into a self-sustained neighbourhood with institutions, markets, temples and modern amenities. Through this transformation, the public Durga Puja remained an important local tradition.
The Beginning of a Tradition
In 1975, pioneering residents of Baikunthapur turned a shared idea into a public community celebration. The early years depended heavily on local effort, contributions and volunteers.
Building the Experience
As participation grew, the Puja experience became more elaborate. Thematic pandals, improved lighting, seating, rituals, feasts and better visitor arrangements reflected the expanding scale of the festival.
Culture Beyond Worship
From 2000 onward, cultural evenings became an important part of the celebration, creating a platform for local music, theatre, dance and art while deepening community involvement.
